Trying to finish this build, usually a build thread gives me the little motivation boost needed.
Have gotten more and more into 2 stroke gas, electric just doesnt do it for me anymore. I have a fully built HPI Baja 5SC will ALL the goodies. Every RPM and Turtle Racing product available. Extremely durable, fast and finished. Which leads to this thing.
Not a true 1/5 scale dimensionally speaking, more along the lines of a 1/6 scale. It's smaller than the 5SC by a good amount. Originally built it during Covid using the diffs and suspension from an HPI Savage. 4 wheel drive, worked decent, burned about 5 gallons through it. Ended up chewing through diffs and breaking dogbones a lot.
Stripped it all down to start over. The frame was bolted together aluminum using 5/16" bolts with a steel cage bolted to the frame. It worked good but wanted to develop cracks here and there. The new frame is basically the old frame but fully welded with some extra bits.

The motor is a 27.5cc Rovan 2 stroke. Bought it off ebay new for $99. Was told it was 100% junk and won't last any amount of time. Turns out to be a pretty good motor. Stripped the exhaust bolts so I rethreaded them and welded some gas pipe together for an exhaust. It is brutally loud but works. Fuel tank is from an HPI Baja as well as many other parts.
The transfer case is a transmission from an HPI Baja. I run it 90 degrees compared to when it is in a Baja (Baja is 2wd). Very stout units, easy to get parts for and upgrade. Also has a brake assembly mounted to the main shaft. A single brake does well at stopping the truck. The differential in the tcase is full of JB weld making it 100% full time 4wd. It has a 2.4:1 ratio. The Savage diffs had 3.2:1 gears. Had to run a high speed pinion/spur to get 30mph out of it. Same set of gears that would typically push a Baja to 70mph+.
Tires for now are HPI Baja clones. Going to use them for mockup at least.
